Exotic Mashups, a residential design by Shin-Lan Chao, takes inspiration from the colonial style and adds a touch of exoticism through a mix and match of eastern and western elements. The result is a space that exudes a rich and exquisite atmosphere. The design incorporates a collection of vintage and foreign furniture, breathing new life into old items and capturing the essence of the golden age.
One of the unique features of this design is the use of delicate strip outlines and materials to create a space atmosphere full of colonial charm. The large-scale transparent French windows allow for a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoor areas, providing a profound impression of the spatial and aesthetic qualities. The private rooms, including the main bedroom and guest room, feature a mix of homogenous materials that create an introverted and rich atmosphere, complemented by warm and transparent daylight lighting.
The realization of this design involved the use of classic southern seas mix and match furniture, vintage pieces, and carefully selected materials. The design also incorporates large French windows that draw in ample sunlight, a descending floor layout for the balcony, vintage mirrors, and unique furniture details such as a tight and sunken barrel straight backboard with a framed headboard and a button-trimmed sofa with edging.
With a model house spanning approximately 70 pings, the design includes two rooms with a multi-functional rest and reading area. The open-ended public area and the large French windows connecting each room create a transparent and cohesive space. The design team aimed to highlight the transparency and coherence of the structure, drawing abundant natural light and evoking a tropical sense of the southern seas. The use of various exotic furniture, fixtures, and equipment further enhances the distinctive colonial-style atmosphere.
Exotic Mashups was brought to life in Taoyuan, Taiwan, and represents the culmination of extensive research and careful planning. The design concept and spatial usage were meticulously executed to create a high-quality living environment. The historical furnishings, calm tones, and luxurious colonial-style elements, such as wooden accents, ivory details, and intricate furniture designs, contribute to the overall aesthetic. The integration of natural advantages, including the strategic use of natural light, further enhances the space.
The design team faced several challenges throughout the project, including the need to balance the living, dining, and kitchen areas in the open-ended space. By incorporating porous partition walls and a sinking balcony that connects the main bedroom and the public area, they were able to achieve a harmonious flow. The addition of a multifunctional round table as the core of each room further enhanced the balance between the public and private areas.
Exotic Mashups is a testament to the designer's ability to blend classic southern seas aesthetics with western elements, resulting in a unique and captivating design. The use of various scales of French windows, the descending floor balcony adorned with greenery, and the strategically placed island that separates the dining and cooking spaces all contribute to the overall liveliness and functionality of the design.
